State officials heard from residents and groups on St. Lawrence Island in the Bering Sea in a first of its kind meeting to address housing overcrowding and affordability in rural Alaska.

Juneau’s Housing First wants to add a new wing with 45 new apartments. But backers say the plan rests with the Juneau Assembly, which is being asked for a $4.2 million commitment.

Anna Timpane said she will continue to organize Sunday soup kitchens through Facebook. She plans to be at the transit center each week around 1:30 p.m., as long as there’s a need.
