At Monday’s event, national church leaders gave $100,000 to Sealaska Heritage Institute to support language revitalization efforts.

Soboleff, who lived to be 102, was a longtime advocate for Lingít people through his ministries and work to support Juneau’s youth. 

The Lingít community was hit hard when the community church was shuttered in a move considered racist.

The three-day language summit brought together nearly 80 speakers of the Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian languages: Lingít, X̱aad Kíl and Sm’algyax.

The Sealaska Heritage Institute unveiled its new structure in downtown Juneau today. It’s called the Walter Soboleff Building after the late Tlingit scholar, elder and religious leader. Inside stands a full-sized replica of a traditional red cedar clan house
