The Alaska Marine Highway System has stopped selling tickets past September. That’s in anticipation to deep cuts that could be fatal to the state ferry network.

The Alaska Marine Highway System announced more changes to the Alaska Class Ferry rollout this week, but the summer schedule is still uncertain. A spokesperson says the new plan will get Alaska Class Ferries in service sooner and save money.

The Fairweather will service the Lynn Canal route four times a week and make two trips to Angoon. The Malaspina will make three trips to Hoonah and Gustavus.

Heavy rains returned to the region this month, triggering a large mudslide on the Haines Highway last weekend. Now the Alaska Earthquake Center says seismic activity may have also played a role.

Walker announced in 2016 that he wasn’t going ahead with the project. But the new Federal Highway Administration decision finalizes that choice.

Mechanical issues canceled a Saturday sailing for the state ferry Kennicott. Several people and their vehicles may be stranded in Homer for two weeks. 

The state ferry LeConte will be tied up in Juneau for a few more days. Sailings throughout Southeast have been canceled through March 10.

The Juneau-based ship will miss sailings to and from Gustavus, Hoonah, Haines and Skagway.

Nine Southeast Alaska communities will see reduced ferry service in April. That’s because the Malaspina’s overhaul will start about a month late.

Haines and Skagway residents have to wait another couple days for ferry service this week. Forecasted high winds and freezing spray canceled the state ferry LeConte for the third time since Friday.
