The new petition comes less than a year after Juneau voters shot down a ballot initiative to ban large cruise ships on Saturdays.

Members voted 8-1 in favor of the development of Huna Totem Corporation’s proposed downtown dock after a years-long process.

There will be at least eight people working at the glacier this summer as cultural ambassadors. They’re employed by the local tribe and teach visitors about Lingít history, culture and connections to the land.

The Assembly will vote on whether to lease city-owned tidelands, the submerged land in the Gastineau Channel, for the project. Without a tidelands lease, the dock can’t move forward.

The jobs were formerly filled by federal workers, and city leaders say the proposal acts as a safety net in the face of further uncertainty at the federal level.

About the same number of people registered for the Buckwheat International Ski Classic this year as last year. And nearly 70% were Canadian.
