The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimates that defunding Planned Parenthood would cause an uptick in births. Nearly half of pregnancies in the U.S. are covered by Medicaid.

Republicans in the U.S. House on Monday released their plan to replace former President Obama’s signature health care law. The new plan would phase out the Affordable Care Act’s expansion of Medicaid. The House proposal offers tax credits to help people buy insurance if they don’t get it through their jobs. But those tax credits are far less generous to Alaskans than the subsidies in existing law.

Across the U.S., anti-abortion protesters flocked to clinics to demand the defunding of Planned Parenthood. In many cities, supporters showed up to counterprotest — sometimes right across the street.

What’s drawn more controversy is that the measure would bar schools from using educational material from any “abortion services provider.” That includes Planned Parenthood, which says it currently provides education to over 2,000 Alaskan children.

The Texas grand jury investigating Planned Parenthood found no wrongdoing by the abortion provider, but it indicted two anti-abortion activists involved in making covert videos of the organization.

Thursday’s vote marks the first time an ACA repeal bill has made it through the Senate. It will likely pass the House, but it has no chance of being signed into law by President Obama.
