Why are you running for re-election?
I’m running for re-election because I think that there are things that we, as the Assembly, have done over the last four years that I have been on the Assembly that we’ve started that are still in progress, and I want to see them through. The main one at the moment is housing, which is everybody’s big priority now. And I think we’re making a lot of progress on housing. So I want to see that through and then I have some other goals when it comes to budgeting in our finance process.
What are you most proud of from your current term?
The thing that I’m most proud of from my time on the Assembly so far is, during COVID and right after we had shut everything down in March of 2020, as soon as we made that decision, which was the right decision for everybody’s health, I said, ‘Okay, now we have to do something for the business owners and their employees that we’ve just temporarily put out of business.’ So we got a emergency loan program stood up and money out the door by early April of 2020. And that was well before any federal or state programs, were able to help, were able to distribute help. So that is the thing that I am most proud of during my time on the Assembly, and probably will be for the rest of my time.
What do you hope to accomplish in your next term?
Like I mentioned, housing is our big priority. We’re making progress on that. I think we still have a lot of work to do on that. But we’re trying lots of things. And I think we’ve got good momentum. But outside of housing, I would like to focus on our budget process. I think we haven’t had a very disciplined budget process in the last few years. And it has been crazy, so I won’t ding us too much for that. But I’d like us to get back to a process where we are on a more scheduled way of appropriating money and we are taking a more holistic view of what we’re spending and how and where, so that we can make better decisions about what we’re doing with people’s money. Because it isn’t our money. It does come from taxpayers. So I think if we can be better at planning that out, we’ll just have better long term results and we’ll see bigger impacts in the long term.
