The University of Alaska Southeast participated in News Engagement Day on Tuesday. It’s part of a national effort to increase civic participation and media literacy, something Assistant Professor of Communications Rosemarie Alexander says is critical for young people.
The Haines Assembly is holding a special meeting this week to discuss what the borough manager has called a “politically motivated” proposed timber sale. The University of Alaska is offering 400 acres of Haines-area land for timber harvest. The land is located on the Chilkat Peninsula and abuts many residential properties.

The Haines Planning Commission is considering whether to restrict resource extraction in the Mud Bay area.
UA has seen its tuition steadily increase over the last several years, including a 5 percent increase last year. Colby Freel, chair of the Coalition of Student Leaders, said increases like this have come to be expected by UA students.
The new $245 million powerplant, scheduled to come online next year, will feature updated technology that’ll reduce most pollutants – but it will continue to emit greenhouse gases blamed for warming the planet. Many on campus say that conflicts with UAF’s leadership in Arctic climate-change research.
