Special meeting on proposed Chilkat Peninsula timber sale
The Haines Assembly is holding a special meeting this week to discuss what the borough manager has called a “politically motivated” proposed timber sale. The University of Alaska is offering 400 acres of Haines-area land for timber harvest. The land is located on the Chilkat Peninsula and abuts many residential properties.
Italian student spends a month in the Haines fourth grade
Earlier this school year, Haines fourth-graders learned about another part of the world from someone their own age. An Italian student visiting a family friend in Haines spent a month in the local school.
Haines first community to sign DOC contract focused on pretrial services
As part of that program, the state wants to shift its relationship with 15 communities that operate rural jails. It will mean more money for local police departments, but also more work on the prevention side of things. Haines is the first community to sign the new contract.

For the second time in two years, a Skagway political figure has been ordered to pay a fine for incomplete financial disclosures. Assembly hopeful Dan Henry failed to disclose substantial debt on his candidate paperwork. He will still be able to run for office in the upcoming election.

The University of Alaska is offering up 400 acres of its Haines-area land for timber harvest. The timing of the university’s decision was motivated by a conversation happening at the local level. The Haines Planning Commission is considering whether to restrict resource extraction in the Mud Bay area.
Mixed drinks in question at Alaska distilleries
Craft distilleries in Alaska are reeling after a decision that could change the part of their businesses most accessible to the public: tasting rooms. Distilleries have been operating tasting rooms since 2014 legislation allowing that practice.
Freeride ski and snowboard competition not returning to Haines in 2018
Freeride World Tour, an international big mountain ski and snowboard competition that brought an economic boost to Haines for three winters is not returning to Alaska in 2018.
King salmon returning to Chilkat River exceed expectations, but continue on downward trend
Adult king salmon are returning to the Chilkat River at historically low numbers. The population has been decreasing over the past 10 years. In 2016, the Chilkat saw the lowest escapement estimate in about 25 years. Preliminary counts for 2017 show the downward trend is not letting up and fishing restrictions are likely to continue next year.
NTSB releases preliminary report of investigation into Juneau-area commuter flight accident
An investigation into an August commuter flight accident takes a close look at the aircraft’s fuel sources. A Haines-based pilot made an emergency water landing in the Juneau area in August. He, along with four passengers, swam safely to shore.
