Matt Herskowitz: Taking the best of both piano worlds.

Guests: Matt Herskowitz, pianist.
Matt Herskowitz says his son Raphaël, who is now a toddler, shows an early affinity for the violin, apparently inspired by hearing recordings of Lara St. John, also a performer at this year’s Juneau Jazz and Classics Fall Festival (Photo courtesy of Matt Herskowitz).

Like father, like son. So it seems with Matt Herskowitz and his two-year-old son, Raphaël. When Matt was a toddler, he embraced the piano. And likewise, Raphaël seems to have already chosen his instrument — the violin.

Although Raphaël Herskowitz has two parents who are professional pianists, the violin appears to be his instrument of choice (Photo courtesy of Matt Herskowitz).

In this conversation with Rhonda McBride, Herskowitz talks about fatherhood, the two musical languages of jazz and classics and how he became fluent in both.
