Juneau police have identified the victim in Tuesday night’s shooting as 30-year-old Brandon C. Cook.

Twenty-year-old Samuel Atchak was arraigned in Bethel Superior Court Tuesday morning.

The judge said that because Ray Tensing faces a potential life-in-prison sentence, she was setting his bail at $1 million.

According to charging documents Atchak said he placed Smart in a “choke hold” until she lost consciousness and he sexually assaulted her.

The jury, which heard nearly three months of testimony in the case, deliberated for a day and a half before arriving at a decision. Holmes had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.
