KTOO spoke with Juneau fire chief Rich Etheridge about a recent incident of someone falling through the ice, what to do if it happens, and other safety precautions.

Though the ice on Mendenhall Lake is new, meteorologists expect it will freeze and thaw several times this winter. That will cause additional cracks and weak spots across the lake.

Although the famous blue caverns from several years ago have disappeared, word of a new cave spread over social media this winter and brought crowds to the glacier. But while hiking to the cave is a remarkable experience, it also comes with some risk.

This weekend, guests to the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center can see a safety demonstration on ice.

Capital City Fire and Rescue and the U.S. Forest Service are sponsoring an ice safety workshop at the Mendenhall Glacier.
