Update: Car accident in Petersburg kills two; Fourth of July parade and carnival canceled

The fatal victims of Petersburg car accident have been identified as 18-year-old Molly Parks and 19-year-old Marie Giesbrecht.

The two injured people in the vehicle are in the local hospital with non-life threatening injuries and were reported in good condition. Their names remain unreleased.

The car turned over into a ditch near the South Harbor parking lot at about 7:30 a.m. Police secured the area and nearby vehicles with yellow ribbon.

Molly Parks graduated from Petersburg High School this year and Marie Giesbrecht graduated from the school last year.

In Petersburg, a single vehicle accident Monday morning has left two dead and two injured. The community’s Fourth of July parade and carnival has been canceled.

The wreck happened at about 7:30 a.m. near South Harbor. Officials have not released the names of the individuals involved nor details of the accident. The two injured were transported to the local hospital and were reported in OK condition as of noon.

A candlelight vigil will be held at 10 p.m. in downtown Petersburg. There will be a procession to and paper lanterns will be released before the fireworks display scheduled at 11.

Counselors are available today at the Lutheran Church’s Holy Cross House where community members have been gathering.
