Jury selection begins in Rayco lawsuit

A civil suit stemming from the murder of a worker at the Fred Meyer expansion project nine years ago is finally headed to trial.

Simone Kim was killed by Jason Coday on the back side of the store. Coday used a weapon that he acquired a few days before from Rayco Sales, just across Egan Drive from the worksite.

The Kim family filed the lawsuit against Ray Coxe of Rayco Sales and the pre-trial lawsuit, at one point, went all the way up to the Alaska Supreme Court.

Jury selection gets underway Tuesday in Juneau Superior Court. Jurors ultimately will have to decide whether Coday purchased the gun or stole it as they determine if Coxe was liable for Kim’s death.

Editor’s note: Jury selection was originally scheduled for Monday, but the judge has delayed it.
