Former Juneau assembly member files to run for mayor

A former assembly member has jumped into the race to be Juneau’s next mayor.

Ken Koelsch announced his candidacy on Friday, and he’s the first one to be certified by the City Clerk’s office.

Koelsch served on the Assembly from 1997 until 2003 and also as deputy mayor from 2001 until 2003. According to a brief profile provided by his campaign, Koelsch also taught English, history, and government at Juneau-Douglas High School for thirty years.

Koelsch then became port director for the U.S. Customs and Border Protection until he retired in 2014.

The candidate filing period ends at 4:30 p.m. Jan. 25.

Special election is March 15.

Mayor Greg Fisk died in November. The successful candidate would fill out the reminder of the three-year term that ends Oct. 2018.
