After-school childcare is on the agenda for Tuesday night’s school board meeting. The Juneau Board of Education will take a first look at a lease with a local childcare provider to run a program at Sayéik: Gastineau Community School.
This comes after the Juneau Assembly awarded $270,000 to Southeast Childhood Collective to stabilize childcare access for school-age children.
The only elementary school on Douglas has been bussing students to Harborview Elementary after the district ended its own program in 2025.
The lease requires at least two meetings before approval.
The school board will also consider approving a 6-year-long capital improvement plan to submit to the state Department of Education and Early Development. It’s part of a process to request state funding for capital projects like improving the boiler system at Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaa.at Kalé.
Last month, the Juneau Assembly decided not to put a school improvement bond before voters for a second year in a row. The projects that would have been included are similar to those listed in the proposed plan.
The board will also consider revising policies related to board goals, as well as a new organizational chart.
Before its meeting, the board will hold a work session at 4:30 p.m. with a back to school update.
The regular school board meeting will take place Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Thunder Mountain Middle School library and over Zoom. The public will have the opportunity to comment on agenda items in person and online.
