A private search was suspended this weekend for two men missing since their cabin cruiser capsized near Horse Island on November 20th. Despite help from Gene and Sandy Ralston of Idaho and their underwater search equipment, the final resting place of James Metlicka of Eagle River and Nick Mayer of Juneau remains a mystery.
The outcome was different last March when Gene Ralston offered his services after divers gave up their search for another Juneau resident. He was able to locate the body of Charles Jacobs in 120 feet of water in Auke Bay harbor near the sailboat where Jacobs lived with his wife.
Anne Sutton spoke with Ralston last week about his side scan sonar equipment – its advantages, its limitations – and the couple’s drive to help out.
