Southeast fishermen seek relief from expanding sea otter population
Crabbers and dive fishermen returned to Alaska’s Board of Fish this month seeking changes to commercial fishing regulations in Southeast Alaska for crab and other shellfish impacted by a growing population of sea otters in the region.
Petersburg, Southeast Alaska population drops
State figures released on Wednesday show the state’s population is 737,080. That’s down 2,629 from 2016 and is the first decrease since 1988.
Petersburg looks at fees for tax exemption, cruise passengers
Petersburg Borough Assembly heard Monday from mostly supporters of proposals to charge two new fees in the borough. One would be an administrative fee for senior citizens who apply for an exemption from local sales tax. Another would be a fee on cruise ship passengers visiting the area.
Petersburg police collect over 11,000 pills in less than a year
Petersburg Police Department has gathered over 11,000 unused prescription medication and other pills since it opened up a collection box in the new police station lobby in late February.
Attorneys argue Petersburg lawsuit over seized evidence
Attorneys made oral arguments this month in a Petersburg civil suit challenging sealed search warrants under Alaska court rules. The plaintiffs want to see the state institute some process for the target of a law enforcement investigation to regain property seized as evidence and in a “reasonable” period of time.
