The Juneau School Board will consider a complaint over curriculum being used at Kax̱dig̱oowu Héen Elementary at its Tuesday meeting.

Last year, a student’s parents reported concerns to the district over the elementary school’s use of classroom management materials from a program called Focus Five/Acting Right. The district issued its finding earlier this month that no changes needed to happen.

The parents appealed that finding and filed a request for the program to be independently reviewed. The board now must decide what to do next. District administration recommends the board maintain the status quo. At Tuesday’s meeting, the board is slated to hear from both the parents and district leadership.

Also during the meeting, the board will swear in Brittany Cioni-Haywood and David Noon. Both members were reelected for a second three-year term. The board will also approve board officer positions.

The board is expected to hear an update from the superintendent about student enrollment numbers.

The board will have a first hearing on a grant from Sealaska Heritage Institute to support elementary student writing skills. The more than $251,000 grant is part of a five-year initiative, and would fund the second year of work.

The board will also review proposed changes to its policies around the district’s fund balance, as well as grants and donations. One proposed change would allow the superintendent to accept donations and grants up to $100,000 that don’t include funding for staffing. The current amount is up to $10,000. Other gifts would still require board approval.

Those agenda items are subject for approval at the board’s November meeting.

Before Tuesday’s meeting, the board will hold a work session at 4:30 p.m. on setting board goals.

The regular school board meeting will take place at 6 p.m. at the Thunder Mountain Middle School library and over Zoom. The public will have the opportunity to comment on agenda items in person and online.
