Two community wellness events in Juneau are coming up – one focused on empowering cancer survivors, and the other on early cancer detection.
This Friday, Oct. 23, Southeast Radiation Oncology Center is hosting a free prostate cancer screening. It’ll be at Devil’s Club Brewing Company and it’s for men over age 40.
Jess Gutzwiler with Aurora Integrated Oncology Foundation in Anchorage talked about the event on KTOO’s Juneau Afternoon last week. She said the screening is a blood test.
“It’s just a tiny little blood draw, nothing more invasive for a prostate cancer screening, and it’s absolutely free,” said Gutzwiler, vice president of community relations and philanthropy at Aurora Integrated Oncology Foundation, which is a sponsor of the event.
During the Friday event from 5 to 7 p.m., participants will get one free beer.
Then the next day, on Saturday Oct. 24, Cancer Connection is holding its annual Community Health Forum. The free event is at Centennial Hall.
The forum starts at 11 a.m. with a vendor hall. People can connect with local health resources and services.
“We have a number of really wonderful folks in town that you can come and speak to. This is a good, you know, opportunity to really learn what’s available in our community and services and programs that might be helpful to you,” said Cancer Connection Executive Director Christy Ciambor, also on Juneau Afternoon.
At noon, naturopathic doctor Amy Loschert with Aurora Integrated Oncology Foundation is giving the keynote. Her talk is on “A Holistic Model of Survivorship: How to Come Back Stronger After Cancer.”
She’ll speak about what people who are post cancer can do to stay healthy.
“So we’re going to talk about all of that. What you’re at more risk for, why that is, based on treatment that you’ve had, and then what are some natural remedies that you could employ that would be helpful for you as cancer survivors, what’s actionable,” Loschert said.
Loschert’s keynote talk will be paired with a free lunch. The Saturday community health forum is open to all. For planning purposes, Cancer Connection is asking community members planning to attend to RSVP here.
The keynote talk will also be livestreamed on Cancer Connection’s YouTube page.
