A man who barricaded himself within an office building near the state Capitol voluntarily surrendered to Juneau Police Friday afternoon, according to Deputy Police Chief Krag Campbell. No injuries have been reported and police haven’t disclosed the man’s identity.
Earlier in the day, Juneau Police, Alaska State Troopers and Capital City Fire/Rescue sent responders inside the State of Alaska’s Community Building on Third Street between Main and Seward Street, according to Police Chief Derek Bos.
Police received reports of a man with a knife yelling “nonsensical statements” around the Downtown area. He eventually entered the Community Building, which houses the state Public Advocacy Center.
“He did threaten officers with the knife. He’s not threatened anybody from the public,” Bos said around 1 p.m. Friday. “He is barricaded inside an office, and we do have our crisis negotiation teams talking to him right now, just trying to calm him down and de-escalate with him.”

Bos said the agencies collaborated in the effort. In addition to the crisis negotiation team, Bos said the first responders sent in a mobile crisis team, fire and emergency services, and officers who responded to the initial report.
During the incident, Bos said police evacuated the first floor of the building where the man was barricaded. People on the other floors were told to shelter in place, he said.
After surrendering his knife and a screwdriver to police, the man voluntarily came out of the building. He was then transported to Bartlett Regional Hospital for medical evaluation.
