Search underway for missing crewmembers off Dutch Harbor

The U.S. Coast Guard is on the scene of a vessel that sank about 12 miles off Dutch Harbor. Three crewmembers have been rescued. Two crewmembers are still missing after the 117-foot motor vessel Exito quickly took on water about 9:42 p.m. Tuesday.

A Coast Guard C-130 aircraft is on the scene and an H-60 helicopter has been dispatched. The cutter Alex Haley is heading to the area and should arrive early Wednesday afternoon.

Four good Samaritan vessels are helping with search and rescue efforts.

Petty Officer Brent Flanick, search-and-rescue controller at the Coast Guard’s command center in Juneau, said all five crewmembers donned survival suits when they abandoned ship. The three crewmembers who were rescued were found in a life raft by another vessel.

Visibility is reported to be good at the scene. Seas are about 8 to 10 feet and winds are blowing to about 20 knots.
