Several Wrangell boats broken into over weekend

Several boats in Wrangell were broken into over the weekend.

Wrangell Police Department was notified of the break-ins early Saturday morning.

Five boats were entered in Heritage Harbor, but only three are thought to have had items taken.

Boat owners are still evaluating the value of the stolen items.

One owner, Stephen Prysunka, said he had one suit case of dive equipment taken.

“They had taken that and then unplugged the heater I had in my boat and left it behind and had taken my dishes which I thought was bizarre,” he said. “They left behind some other stuff that was fairly valuable but breezed past that.”

Two VHF radios and a pair of binoculars were also missing, he said.

Prysunka has lived in Wrangell for 21 years and said he’s never had an issue.

“My boat has been at Heritage as long as Heritage has been open, but I’ve had boats in other harbors. I think once somebody took some gasoline from a container on my boat,” Prysunka said. “That’s the worst thing we’ve had happen.”

Police said DNA samples were taken from the scene.

A Harley-Davidson motorcycle was reportedly stolen. Police are unsure whether that incident is related.
