November 4, 2020 / This week from The Signal

All the latest news and information from around Alaska.

But first…

Election Night was what it was. I was able to see most KTOO reporters one at a time in person last night when they came to the station to claim their Election Night pizza slices. Even during one of the biggest news events of the year, the building felt abandoned.

We kept the airwaves lively, though, bringing you 7 hours of live coverage from both NPR and our network of statewide reporters. Behind the controls of our bright new studio -- that was finished in March, right when the pandemic forced us to work from home -- I felt a little bit of the spark that has always drawn me to broadcast news. It's not like you can hear the dead plants or the piles of yellowing newspapers on the newsroom floor, right?

And now, back in our comfy pants and our home offices, we'll keep you updated daily for at least another week on results in Alaska's key races.

New York’s First Ever Miniature Halloween Parade 2020
The Greenwich Village Halloween parade that usually happens in NYC was canceled due to the pandemic this year, so the organizers did it with puppets on the internet instead and it is as delightful as it is safe.

Good Reads

I'm trying to stay away from Facebook these days, so I need a place to share the great journalism I read/hear each week, like...

What America can learn about confronting racism from Germany after the Holocaust (Vox); how the Taiwanese prefer fortunetellers over therapists (Vice); how our neighbors in Yukon Territory got ahead by not 'falling back' this year (CBC); Latinas are leaving the workforce at 3 times the rate of white women during the pandemic (NPR); gorgeous and poignant photos from Cordova of an art installation with candles representing migrant children separated from their parents (The Cordova Times).
KTOO Public Media would like to acknowledge the L'eeneidí and the Wooshkeetaan of the Áak’w Khwáan. Our broadcast studios are on their ancestral homeland. Our building sits on fill that was once tideland and part of what is called the Indian Village. The families of the Juneau Indian Village, like their ancestors, cherish and depend upon their immediate connection to the waterfront. KTOO is working to lift up Tlingit voices and the Tlingit language. Please excuse us for our mistakes, and gunalchéesh for your patience as we learn.
