December 17, 2019 / This week from The Signal

The First Annual Signal Holiday Cheer Exchange!
With messages from Signal readers like you.
Season's greetings from KTOO Public Media! Top, from left to right: Rashah McChesney, Mikko Wilson, Scott Burton, Robyn Anderson, Ryan Cunningham, Andrew Kitchenman. Middle, from left to right: Sheli DeLaney, Adelyn Baxter, Monika Kunat. Bottom: Pups of KTOO.

But first… Holiday Cheer for all Signaliens

 At the beginning of 2019, KTOO Digital Director David Purdy and I really wanted to make a newsletter. We wanted something that would deliver all of the best reporting from Alaska's incredible network of public media journalists, and we wanted to package it in a way that was engaging and truly unique. It was David's idea to let me write the newsletter in my voice, so we all have him to thank/blame for The Signal as we know it. Writing this newsletter has turned into my favorite part of my job, and without the enthusiasm and support of everyone who subscribes, there's no way KTOO could justify paying me to come up with bad jokes and worse puns every week.

So thank you David for your vision, thanks to Tanna Peters for designing and naming The Signal, and thanks to all 1,800 of you who receive The Signal every week. As a token of my appreciation, I'd like to share this video from one of the world's finest musicians. Enjoy!

There's no news in this edition of The Signal, just Holiday Cheer from readers like you. The Signal returns on Jan. 7, 2020. Until then, have merry holidays and a jolly new year!

Dear North Pole City Council Member Santa Claus,

Hi Council Member Claus. I know you are a member of the Alaska Public Broadcasting Commission, so fingers crossed that you are a fellow Signalien and you'll read this message! I figure you get a lot of wishes and requests, and you've said that the best present is love, so here it is.

Congratulations on winning your election to the North Pole City Council! You are a fantastic advocate for children and keeping the North Pole “where the Spirit of Christmas lives year ’round.” I hope that our public servants throughout the state will follow your passion for a balanced budget and helping Alaska's future. It's a bummer that Facebook took down your page because they don't think you're real, but you are real, and I believe in you.

P.S. Thank you for always ending your online messages like this :-)}

The Signal has been a great gift in 2019, a year that needs humor. I appreciate the thoughtful summaries, positive language, and horrible puns.

From: Rashah McChesney
To: Everyone!
This is my favorite reminder that it's cool to be alone in the winter. It's a poem by Henry Longfellow:

The holiest of all holidays are those
Kept by ourselves in silence and apart;
The secret anniversaries of the heart,
When the full river of feeling overflows;—
The happy days unclouded to their close;
The sudden joys that out of darkness start
As flames from ashes; swift desires that dart
Like swallows singing down each wind that blows!
White as the gleam of a receding sail,
White as a cloud that floats and fades in air,
White as the whitest lily on a stream,
These tender memories are;— a Fairy Tale
Of some enchanted land we know not where,
But lovely as a landscape in a dream.
