"Unangax̂"

A total of 59 audio reels were saved from the project. On them are things like teachings from elder Bill Tcheripanoff in September of 1977, who was recorded talking to Unalaska students about an ulux̂tax̂, an Unangax̂ skin-on-frame sea kayak. There are clips of friends and families playing games in their homes, as well as lists of words translated into Unangam Tunuu.

It took a lot of work to confirm that Private George Fox was buried in Unalaska. That was just the start of the battle in getting him a proper gravestone.

Camp Adgayux̂, also known as Camp A, resumed in 2021 at Unalaska’s Community Center after it was canceled last year due to coronavirus concerns.

The course will be one of several Alaska Native language courses offered at the university through its Alaska Native Studies program.

“We’ve seen, so many times, all throughout our country, where our sacred grounds have been desecrated and disrespected and not cared for,” said Martin Stepetin, who has been advocating to protect the cemetery since 2014.

For years, a small American flag was all that marked the grave of George Fox. Now, his resting place will finally be recognized. 

A bill protecting the graves of Unangax̂ people forced to live in internment camps in Funter Bay has passed the Alaska Legislature and awaits Gov. Dunleavy’s signature. 

In Alaska, the names of settlers and explorers can be found everywhere: roads, cities, buildings and statues — all reminders of Alaska’s colonization and the impact it has had on the Indigenous population.

Alaska lawmakers are considering expanding a state park to include historic graves of Unangax̂ people who died in a World War II internment camp.

To get full funding, each Alaska school needs at least 10 students. But at the Yakov E. Netsvetov school in Atka, there are only six — meaning this could be the school’s final year.
