The Haines Assembly is holding a special meeting this week to discuss what the borough manager has called a “politically motivated” proposed timber sale. The University of Alaska is offering 400 acres of Haines-area land for timber harvest. The land is located on the Chilkat Peninsula and abuts many residential properties.

The results of Haines’ special recall election were certified Tuesday night. The effort to unseat Assembly members Heather Lende, Tresham Gregg and Tom Morphet failed, with about 60 percent voting against the recall.

Haines will have a special recall election on August 15. Borough Clerk Julie Cozzi announced Friday evening that petitions to recall three Assembly members had been certified. That means each petition had signatures from at least 258 registered Haines Borough voters.

Resident Don Turner Jr., along with nine other people, signed three requests for recall petitions. They accuse Assembly members Tom Morphet, Heather Lende and Tresham Gregg of misconduct in office.

A waterfront trail and park in Haines is estimated to cost close to $6 million, that’s based on plans developed during two rounds of meetings between designers and the community. The preferred plan includes a path on top of the breakwater in the harbor, and a Chilkat blanket design as a unifying theme.
