It’s been a year since heavy rains and deadly landslides swept through Haines. The small community mustered an extensive recovery effort, but some people don’t have homes to return to, and it’s clear that there’s still more work and more healing to do.
Mayor Douglas Olerud says the event is an opportunity to commemorate the disaster, reflect on the recovery effort over the last year, and celebrate Haines resilience.
Team Rubicon is mostly veterans and first responders volunteering to do disaster recovery missions around the world.
The Haines Long Term Recovery Group formed in December to help piece together recovery strategies across the Haines Borough.
