The City and Borough of Juneau doesn’t currently have a budget to plow and remove snow at the same time. So to clear the roads, the snow is sometimes piled onto the sidewalks, or onto people’s driveways.
It’s winter, and that usually means plenty of snow and ice. Or at least it did in November, when reporter Adelyn Baxter had the chance to ride shotgun in a 54,000-pound plow truck to learn a little about how roads in Juneau are cleared.
Budget cuts mean reduced maintenance. The downsized operation is expected to be tested this winter.
