There have been some pretty incredibly high temperatures recently in the Pacific Northwest. Southeast Alaska has shared in that, with some local, daily record highs.

Multiple airport tenants in Seattle and Portland issued layoff notices in the past week. But in a possible sign of optimism over the long term, the Pacific Northwest’s major airport operators, the ports of Seattle and Portland, are continuing with big budget construction projects.

“The courts’ view of it is that the case is unusual enough and novel enough that it would be wise to resolve some of the legal uncertainty before trial rather than after,” said environmental law professor Sean Hecht.

Shell began drilling the top of a well in the Chukchi Sea last week, but it does not have federal permission from the U.S. Interior Department to drill into oil-bearing rocks unless the Fennica is on site.

The state ferry Columbia will not return to service until June 18th, about seven weeks later than expected.
