The U.S. Department of the Interior withdrew a legal opinion last week that gave Tlingit and Haida — and other tribes in Alaska — legal jurisdiction over Alaska Native allotments.

At times, Tlingit & Haida tribal officials were outraged because some city officials brushed aside the tribe’s assertion of its sovereignty on the land where it runs its fireworks shop.

After a decades-long process, the state wants to wrap up the acquisition of land for that road and is prepared to use the force of law if necessary.
