Alaska Attorney General Treg Taylor says that the state is disappointed in the decision and is evaluating its next steps in the case.

More than 20 residents shared public testimony at Monday night’s Assembly meeting. While some championed the city’s plan, others expressed frustration with its rollout and cost.

Venturing out onto a frozen lake can be extremely dangerous, and several reports of people falling through the ice circulated on social media. 

The National Weather Service Juneau has canceled the flood warning for Mendenhall Lake and River. Water will continue to recede through the morning hours.

Most of the money will go toward debris removal and repairs to city infrastructure, but $150,000 will go toward studying ways to prevent catastrophic flooding in the future.

Many residents whose neighborhoods were damaged by last year’s outburst flood were preparing for the worst case scenario on Monday.

Minor flood stage will begin Monday morning, flood water expected to crest sometime early Tuesday.

Flood waters are expected to crest sometime on Saturday evening, with a four-to-six foot increase for Mendenhall Lake.

Rodriguez was known in the community for his photography. He used his drone to take striking photos and videos of Juneau’s landscapes, including many of the Mendenhall Glacier. 

Though the ice on Mendenhall Lake is new, meteorologists expect it will freeze and thaw several times this winter. That will cause additional cracks and weak spots across the lake.
