At an open house on Wednesday, it was clear that the kootéeyaa are meant to honor and acknowledge the original people of the land. But some of those original people say they should be included in creating the plan.

For the first time this year, tribal members were hired as ambassadors to share their own experiences and culture with visitors. 

“The people who go there want to learn about the glacier,” President Richard Chalyee Éesh Peterson said. “They also want to learn about the people.”

This is Jans’ 14th book, and his first that features photography more than writing.

Inside were 11 notes written by Juneau kids back in 2006.

The Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center will open to the public on Tuesday, June 1. It will be the first time since doors closed in March 2020 due to COVID-19 concerns.

Although the famous blue caverns from several years ago have disappeared, word of a new cave spread over social media this winter and brought crowds to the glacier. But while hiking to the cave is a remarkable experience, it also comes with some risk.
