Bat studies in Alaska are a burgeoning area of research.
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game launched a project in 2014 to get accurate data on the region’s bat populations. Now they’re racing against the clock before a deadly bat disease reaches Alaska.
Since 2014, the state has recruited citizen scientists to monitor bats in Southeast Alaska, and discoveries are being made. For example, last summer, the state recorded the first documentation of swarming behavior outside of a cave or mine.
