The main concerns the committee had were about the lack of affordable housing in Juneau and a lack of public input on the legislation.
The Juneau Assembly created the Systemic Racism Review Committee last year. Before, staffers and policymakers rarely discussed race and equity.
The committee will review proposed laws and advise the assembly if they include a policy or implication that is racist.
Teacher Shgen George says the texts are condescending and trivialize the true experiences of Native people.
“I’m going to miss the input. We had several community members who, over the years, have contributed a great deal to the discussion,” says Barbara Thurston.
