The LeConte Glacier student survey was started in 1983 by Petersburg High School teacher Paul Bowen and has happened almost every year since then.

Glaciologists have wrapped up two years of research on LeConte glacier near Petersburg. Their preliminary findings show that the glacier could reach a record retreat by the end of the year. And it could be an indicator for what’s going to happen in Greenland.

Petersburg High School students completed their annual survey of the position of the LeConte Glacier on the mainland near Petersburg last month. The southern-most tidewater glacier in the northern hemisphere has shown a little change since last year.
