Juneau Police and Fish and Game have responded to thirteen different bears trying to get into garbage this year. Four were moved far away from town, while nine were killed because they were a threat to life or property.
In 30 years or so, visitors might not be able to see the Mendenhall Glacier from the visitor center. The U.S. Forest Service is preparing for that reality.
Although the famous blue caverns from several years ago have disappeared, word of a new cave spread over social media this winter and brought crowds to the glacier. But while hiking to the cave is a remarkable experience, it also comes with some risk.
“I will never do that again and put people in danger,” the woman said after getting home.
This weekend, guests to the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center can see a safety demonstration on ice.
