Both city officials and residents have been hesitant to adopt the new hazard maps since their introduction in the spring of 2021.
Precipitation has increased by 20 inches a year in the last century and will keep rising. Ocean warming will stress marine ecosystems. More landslides will happen as the region gets warmer and wetter.
The maps put 200 more structures in Juneau’s hazard zones for landslides and avalanches.
