Trailblazing Alaska politician Arliss Sturgulewski died on April 7 at the age of 94.
Supporters say Ballot Measure 1 would fix Alaska’s oil tax law and fill the state’s deficit. But those opposed argue it would lead to less investment in Alaska and jeopardize the state’s economy.
The ballot initiative would raise the minimum tax and eliminate oil tax credits for Alaska’s largest legacy fields. It would also require oil companies to publicly report their revenues and costs from those fields.
The initiative group needs to get more than 28,000 signatures in three months to get the “Fair Share Act” on the ballot next year.
