The Elders and Youth Conference is underway in Anchorage this week, back to what it used to be – a time for both young and old to make a personal connection through their love of Alaska Native culture.

The three-day event had been scheduled for Oct. 21-23 in Anchorage.

The annual meeting seeks to strengthen bonds between the oldest and youngest generations of Indigenous people.

The Alaska Federation of Natives convention heard remarks by both of Alaska’s U.S. senators and voted on a number or resolutions, one of which sparked a contentious debate on climate change.

The annual conference precedes the Alaska Federation of Natives convention each fall, designed to strengthen inter-generational connections and share indigenous knowledge around the state. 

Gov. Walker and Lt. Gov. Mallott both spoke, but is was the 17-year-old keynote speaker who brought the room to its feet with applause and cheers.

The First Alaskans Institute has announced the keynote speakers for the 2017 the 34th Elders and Youth Conference, which begins Oct. 16, just ahead of the Alaska Federation of Natives in Anchorage.
