A Tlingit tribe in the Southeast community of Wrangell — the Wrangell Cooperative Association — has been working to recycle electronics to reduce e-waste. That helps keep potentially toxic materials from becoming hazardous waste on the island.

As far as dump make-overs go, Yakutat has the ultimate Cinderella story. The remote fishing community is hundreds of miles from any other city. Barging trash away is too expensive. So, as the dump filled to the brim, what was Yakutat to do? 

In Wrangell, recycling isn’t as simple as wheeling a plastic container out to the curb each week…not to mention trying to get rid of large items like old TVs, computers and printers.

Some of the electronic items dropped off at the trial event included old Apple computers, big screen TVs, even toasters and microwaves. The city is considering holding the event on a regular basis.
