Investigators determined the leg with a boot, found a year ago, had been in the channel for more than 10 years

Gastineau Community School has been renamed Sayéik Gastineau Community School. The Juneau School Board voted unanimously to add the traditional Tlingit name, which loosely translates to “spirit helper.”

The case centered around a dispute between Douglas Indian Association and Central Council Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska over about $1 million in federal transportation funds. The case had been watched closely by other tribes because it tested the jurisdiction of state courts over tribal disputes.

The Douglas Indian Association wants you to know its traditional territory stretches far beyond its namesake city and island. A recent boat tour covered some of the T’aaḵu Kwáan’s lands.

Southeast Alaska tribal groups are calling for cleanup of British Columbia’s long-abandoned Tulsequah Chief Mine. The call comes as a Canadian investment firm shops the prospect to potential new owner.

It is hoped that raising the Raven totem pole will pay respect to the grievances of the past, restore the T’aak̲u K̲wáan’s ancestral connection to the land, and signal their desire to heal and move forward, culture intact.

The somber ceremony is the beginning of the T’aak̲u K̲wáan tribal government’s plans to formally recognize historic trauma and begin healing. The 26-foot Raven Pole honors the Gaanaxteidí clan of the T’aak̲u K̲wáan, leaf of devil’s club that represents healing and a carved staff which represents the end of grieving.

Savikko Park and Gastineau Elementary School will be the future sites of two totem poles. Plans include interpretive signs in Tlingit and English, explaining the history of the original people of Juneau and Douglas: the Auk and Taku Kwaan.

In 1962, the Douglas Indian Village was set ablaze to make way for a new harbor. This month marks 53 years since the city displaced households of Tlingit T’aaku Kwáan families.
