Over the weekend, Washington state tightened the screws again on an Atlantic salmon farming operation. On Saturday, the state Department of Natural Resources terminated the lease for Cooke Aquaculture’s Cypress Island fish farm near Anacortes.
lallam County, Washington, has put a temporary hold on an aquaculture company’s application to relocate and expand a salmon farm near Port Angeles. This comes as the company is cleaning up after a mass escape of non-native Atlantic salmon from a different net pen it owns to the east at Cypress Island. Opponents of salmon farming are seizing the moment.
Officials blame the failure of a pen near Washington’s Cypress Island on high tides caused by the eclipse, but that is being questioned. Fishing boats are scrambling to catch as many as possible.
