The Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority has agreed to fund a housing and homelessness coordinator for the City and Borough of Juneau. This follows the Trust Land Office’s clearing of a downtown lot with a sprawling homeless encampment.
Juneau Mayor Ken Koelsch opposes joining the so-called ‘Climate Mayors’ and re-affirming the city’s commitment to the goals of the Paris climate pact. The matter was brought up for reconsideration at the mayor’s urging following a split decision by the Juneau Assembly to join the climate change initiative.
The feds have extended the comment period over Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska’s application to put downtown parcels into trust. The City and Borough of Juneau had asked for more time to review proposal which could exempt the tribal organization from its jurisdiction.
The City and Borough of Juneau is looking to expand its boundaries on Admiralty Island. That island is home to Angoon, a community of about 500 people, some of whom fear a nearby land annexation would threaten their subsistence lifestyle.
