The Saxman schoolhouse is thought to be the oldest inhabited building in the community of about 400 people.

The Organized Village of Saxman lost its designation during a 2007 Federal Subsistence Board review. A bill now in Congress would change the rural determination process.

“It was suspect in some cases how the artifacts actually ended up in private hands, so to return them to the rightful owner was the right thing to do,” says Carol Laumen.
