Thousands of commercial fishery workers coming to Bristol Bay will be operating under a strict set of guidelines this season, laid out in the new mandate released last week by Gov. Mike Dunleavy. But some local leaders say it’s not enough.
Bristol Bay’s health corporation and the Camai clinic in Naknek are continuing to prepare for the upcoming fishing season, when the region expects thousands of commercial fishers and workers from around the country to come to the region.
The tribe said it decided to withdraw, in part, due to issues with patient care and Bristol Bay Area Health Corp.’s insufficient response to their concerns.
Kanakanak Hospital was first placed in immediate jeopardy on Sept. 27. After a complaint was made, a Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services investigator conducted a survey and noted serious deficiencies in the hospital’s pharmacy.
A survey conducted in September found that practices at the Kanakanak Hospital’s pharmacy put patients at risk for adverse health effects.
