The commanding officer of the Coast Guard’s Alaska district says it may take until summer’s end to catch up on some of the work delayed by the partial federal government shutdown.
The 170-foot Alaska Patriot was under tow from Dutch Harbor to Mexico when it broke free on Dec. 7. The vessel is currently adrift about 215 miles south of Chirikof Island and is a navigational hazard to commercial freighter traffic traveling along the Great Circle route.
Eight buoy tenders and their crews from Alaska, British Columbia, and the Pacific Northwest are in Juneau this week for the annual Buoy Tender Roundup and Olympics.
The Coast Guard is offering public tours in Juneau of its new cutter Bailey Barco. The 154-foot fast-response cutter will be moored near downtown Juneau.
