KTOO is looking for a curious and talented journalist to be one of the voices of our local newsroom in the morning. For decades, we’ve had one morning host bearing the burden of being up early. We now want at least two people to share that responsibility.
When it’s your turn to host, the first half of your job (starting at around 5:30 a.m. local time) will be to make sure our local newscasts are timely, relevant and accurate and that we sound professional — seamlessly transitioning between national and local content. Even if you don’t have the experience now, you’ll eventually become an expert in KTOO’s broadcast equipment and will be the go-to person in the newsroom for understanding how everything works.
Then, as a reporter you’ll cover a little bit of everything, but with a focus on public safety. You’ll be up early so you can get a head start on stories related to weather, transportation, emergency situations, search and rescue efforts (an unfortunate reality in Alaska) and bears (seriously). You should be able to keep up with daily regional news stories on deadline while working away on longer, enterprise reporting. You’ll be expected to serve a local listening audience with news of local and regional importance and to also file relevant stories with the statewide public radio network.
This position reports to the Managing Editor and works closely with the Daily News Editor and other reporters to identify and develop story ideas.
Responsibilities
- Package and deliver several daily newscasts during local broadcast of Morning Edition and Here & Now
- Record and edit audio for daily broadcast, especially using field recording equipment, but also using studio and telephone recording equipment
- Produce news stories for radio and web
- Seek out diverse sources for news stories, striving to put voices and perspectives on the air that our audience has never heard from or would not hear from otherwise
- Run the audio board during special programs and live news coverage
- Program and troubleshoot KTOO’s automation and other broadcast systems
Successful candidates will likely have the following skills and competencies OR demonstrate that they have the equivalent based on lived experience
- At least 2 years of experience working in a newsroom, producing content on deadline
- Familiarity and comfort with using broadcast equipment and live delivery of news
- Confidence in your own voice and in being yourself on the radio
- Excellent writing skills, proven news judgment, and journalistic integrity
- Experience reporting on traditionally underrepresented communities
- Enthusiasm for local news
- Demonstrated strategic thinking about news priorities and pulling together a newscast
- Ability to stay calm under pressure when technology fails, plus a willingness to learn new equipment and operation
