ReVision Alaska: Yaakw: Language Sanctuary on the Water

Loading...

When the pandemic lockdown began, Kaax̱ Tséen Herb Sheakley Jr. focused on learning the Lingít language and recovering traditional knowledge for carving seafaring wooden dugouts, or yaakw. KTOO filmmakers followed Kaax̱ Tseen on this journey, alongside master carver Áanyanki Wayne Price and apprentice Ḵuchein Aidan Bowers. This film bears witness to the colonial violence that pushed the Lingít language and the yaakw to the margins and the healing potential of their resurgence.
