KTOO is looking for an efficient and empathetic editor to usher news stories from shiny ideas to broadcast gold and digital gems.
You’ll be responsible for editing four local news reporters (two of them double as our morning and afternoon news hosts) who are keeping tabs on city and tribal government and constantly looking for information needs and gaps in the community. You’ll help make assignments, but more often you’ll take their bright ideas and help shape them into stories that will engage our audience and make an impact in our community (oh yeah, we track that stuff).
You’ll hopefully have some time to use your own reporting or hosting chops and create meaningful journalism, but your number one priority will be to support the reporters.
This position reports to KTOO’s VP News & Managing Editor and does not have supervisory responsibilities.
Responsibilities:
- Unearth under-covered stories, assign daily news to reporters and edit the coverage to make it shine on air and online
- Conduct daily news meetings to maintain steady stream of breaking and enterprise news
- Provide hands-on editing of daily news stories and newscasts to ensure high caliber, impactful broadcast and online work
- Ensure that work produced by KTOO complies with professional standards for balance, fairness and accuracy
- Serve as additional general assignment reporting capacity, especially paying attention to quick daily news stories no one else can get to
- Fill in for morning and afternoon news hosts as needed
- Work with the managing editor to:
- Identify tools and platforms essential to innovation in storytelling and audience engagement, and advocate for their deployment
- Set productivity, quality and workflow standards and expectations for daily broadcast and digital content
- Ensure diversity and equity in sources, coverage area, and topics within beats
- Assist in providing long-term coverage across all beats
- Assist in onboarding and training of news staff
Successful candidates will likely have the following skills and competencies OR demonstrate that they have equivalent skills based on lived experience:
- At least 3 years of experience working in a newsroom, producing content on deadline
- Excellent writing skills, proven news judgment, and journalistic integrity
- Experience reporting on traditionally underrepresented communities
- Commitment to the craft of journalism AND the willingness to teach others
- Enthusiasm for local news
- Demonstrated strategic thinking about news priorities and pulling together a newscast
- Confidence in identifying as a leader
