An Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew rescued a mariner Monday after his sail boat grounded between Seward and Chenega. The 47-foot Lieveling lost power and went aground on Cape Puget, about 210 miles north of Kodiak.
Haines-based hunting guide Larry Benda was hiking with his client, Glen Eckett of Texas, when Eckett fell, according to troopers. He sustained a non-life-threatening injury but was unable to hike back down. The two were on a ridge to the Northeast of Chilkoot Lake.
After six days, the body of missing pilot David McRae, 55, and his plane have finally been found in Lake Clark National Park. Lt. Col. Candis Olsmstead directs public affairs for the Alaska National Guard said weather cleared enough today to get close to the area.
Residents in the community of Grayling recovered the body of a missing man last week. Alaska State Troopers were alerted at about 12:15 p.m. Oct. 19 that Stanley Milton Walker, 43, was missing and that his jacket had been discovered frozen to Grayling Creek.
